FAQ
This page collects the questions we receive most often about supported macOS versions, pricing, licensing, data handling, features, and support.
Basics
What kind of app is stac?
stac is a font preview and management app for macOS. It lets you browse installed local fonts and Google Fonts while freely adjusting size, weight, spacing, and other preview settings. It can dramatically reduce the time you spend managing and comparing fonts on Mac.
What systems does it support?
stac supports Macs running macOS 12 Monterey or later. It works on both Intel Macs and Apple Silicon Macs. Windows and Linux are not supported.
Pricing and licenses
Can I use it for free?
Yes. The Free plan is available at no cost. It includes local font and Google Fonts preview, comparison mode for up to 8 fonts, up to 5 favorite lists, up to 5 tags, and the rest of the core experience.
What are Founding Supporter, Early Supporter, and Launch Offer?
These are limited pricing tiers for early supporters of stac Pro. Founding Supporter is for the first 50 customers, Early Supporter is for the next 100, and Launch Offer is available for 14 days from the official release date.
After Launch Offer ends, Standard pricing applies.
When does the price change?
Founding Supporter and Early Supporter move to the next tier once the combined purchase count of lifetime and yearly plans reaches each limit.
Launch Offer ends 14 days after the official release date, after which Standard pricing applies. Because the change happens automatically, the displayed price may vary depending on timing. Please confirm the final amount on the checkout page.
Will the yearly plan renew at the same price next year?
Yes. Yearly plans continue renewing at the tier price at which they were purchased. For example, if you buy the yearly plan as a Founding Supporter, it will keep renewing at that price unless you cancel.
If you cancel and subscribe again later, the price available at that time will apply.
Can Stripe checkout show a generic name instead of Founding Supporter?
Yes. Stripe checkout may show a shared product name such as “stac Pro - Lifetime Plan” or “stac Pro - Yearly Plan” instead of the supporter tier name.
The price shown on the pricing page before purchase still applies, and the license contents do not change. Please confirm the amount shown in Stripe before completing the payment.
What changes when I upgrade to Pro?
Comparison mode expands to 30 fonts, favorite lists and tags become unlimited, and drag-and-drop fonts remain saved even after you close the app so you can preview them again next time.
How do I choose between Pro Yearly and Pro Lifetime?
The yearly plan is a good fit if you want to try Pro first or keep the initial cost lower. The lifetime plan is better if you expect to use stac for a long time and prefer not to think about annual renewals.
Both plans include the same Pro features.
How many Macs can use one license?
One license can be used on up to two Macs for your own use. If you want to use it on a third Mac or more, please remove an existing device registration first and then register the new one.
Can I transfer my license when I replace my Mac?
Yes. Each license can be used on up to two Macs. If you replace your Mac or want to switch devices, you can remove an existing device registration and then activate on the new Mac.
What payment methods do you support?
We support credit cards including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and JCB. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and similar methods may also appear when your environment and Stripe Checkout meet the required conditions. Payments are processed securely through Stripe, and stac does not store your credit card number directly.
When will I receive the license key?
We send the license key by email after payment is completed. If you do not receive it, please check your spam folder and then contact us through the contact form.
Do you offer refunds?
Because this is a digital product, we generally do not accept returns or refunds for customer convenience. However, we review cases individually when there are duplicate charges, payment issues, or serious defects that prevent normal use.
Data and security
Does stac upload font files to its server?
No. stac does not upload the contents of drag-and-drop font files or local fonts on your Mac to its own server. Data used for previewing and organization is generally processed and stored on your Mac.
However, previewing Google Fonts does require communication with Google’s servers to display the fonts.
Is usage data stored on a server?
Data such as font settings, favorites, lists, and tags is generally stored only on your Mac. stac does not collect search history, viewed font history, file paths, or information about the fonts you drag and drop.
To understand app usage and improve the service, the Provider may collect minimal non-identifying information such as an anonymous installation ID, submission date, app version, license status, and macOS version.
External communication mainly occurs in the following cases.
- Sending the device ID and license information needed for Pro license activation
- Checking for automatic app updates
- Connecting to Google’s servers while previewing Google Fonts
During Google Fonts preview, information needed for that connection, such as your IP address, may be sent to Google.
How can I delete app data?
Favorites, tags, settings, drag-and-drop fonts, and other data saved in stac can be deleted using the app’s own delete actions or by following support guidance. If you want to confirm or request deletion related to licenses or purchases, please contact us through the contact form.
Can I use Google Fonts commercially?
Fonts listed on Google Fonts can be used according to each font’s own license. Many are open-source fonts that can be used commercially, but you should confirm the license of each font before using it.
stac makes fonts easier to find and compare, but it does not guarantee the licensing terms of each font.
Can I also check the license for local fonts or drag-and-drop fonts?
stac can preview and organize fonts, but for final confirmation of usage rights or commercial use you should review the license documents from the font distributor. If you plan to use a font in client work or deliverables, we recommend checking the terms from the seller or distributor directly.
Features and workflow
What is the drag-and-drop feature?
It lets you drag font files such as .ttf or .otf directly into the app and preview them immediately without installing them. The Free plan supports up to 10 and clears them when the app closes. The Pro plan backs them up inside the app with no quantity limit.
Will stac install fonts automatically when I use it?
No. Simply dragging in a font does not install it on your Mac. If you want to use a font officially, you can install it with Font Book.
stac is designed so that trial fonts are less likely to clutter your Mac.
How do I use comparison mode?
Click the comparison icon on the left side of a font card to add it to the comparison list. When you have selected multiple fonts, press the comparison button in the toolbar to open a dedicated screen that shows only the chosen fonts side by side. You can choose from list, grid, and detail views.
Can I use it offline?
Local fonts on your Mac and data that has already been saved are available offline. However, some features require an internet connection, including new Google Fonts previews, Pro license activation, and automatic update checks.
Can previews switch while I scroll quickly?
If you scroll through a large number of fonts very quickly, some previews may update after their font loading finishes. The app is optimized to feel smooth during normal browsing.
Further improvements for high-speed scrolling are planned for future updates.
Where can I get support?
For issues related to bugs, license activation, payments, or how to use stac, please contact us through the contact form. We may ask for your environment or situation when it is needed to investigate.
